'Tis the Season to be Jolly!
With work-dos, parties, and family gatherings, not to mention inevitable bubbles on New Year's Eve, you might end up enjoying one too many glasses of champagne, staying out later than usual, getting less sleep, and maybe trying to ward off flu. So, to help you feeling fresh and looking rested throughout the party season, try these 6 simple tips... and above all, have a great time!
Cleanse well and remove all of your make-up before sleeping, especially that stubborn water-proof mascara. Foaming cleansers can irritate the skin, so use a gentle water-soluble option. Use a toner to remove any residual cleanser, a simple solution is cotton wool dipped in cooled green tea; it’s packed with anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and feels cooling and refreshing on tired skin. Ps. Green tea can also reduce puffiness around the eyes.
It’s hard to stay on top of your cleansing regime during this busy season so treat your skin with a face mask to give it a regular deep cleanse. (Shameless plug alert...) MIMI Green Goddess Fresh Face Mask is 100% natural and includes clays that cleanse and proteins that rejuvenate the look and feel of your skin. It takes a minute to mix and gets to work in 5-10 minutes. As you’re removing the mask, you can use it to gently exfoliate away dead skin cells, leaving your skin softer and glowing.
Partying reduces the amount of moisture in the skin (alcohol dehydrates the body), so for a moisturising super-boost run a bath, grab a pot of honey and gently smear some on your face, sit and relax for 5-10 minutes then wipe of gently with damp cotton wool. Honey is a natural humectant (draws in moisture) and will leave your skin feeling soft and plumped.
Consuming a wide variety of nutrients can help you feel more energised, more alert, enhance your mood, help maintain a healthy body and enhance the appearance of your skin. Juicing and blending smoothies is an easy way to boost your nutrient intake without having to munch through a plate of veggies. Most fruit and veg contain a variety of nutrients so you really can’t go wrong, but a simple guide is to opt for red coloured juices for a burst of antioxidants, and green juices for a surge of minerals. A good juice should taste of heaven, not of earth. (It's the best hang-over cure).
Water that is. Drinking a glass of still water (it’s more hydrating than sparkling) for every alcoholic drink you have, can help your body flush out toxins and keep you hydrated (and help prevent post-party headaches). You may end up peeing frequently, but at least you’ll have a good excuse to leave awkward conversations.
If you find you simply can’t face another party but have to put on a brave face, try this: use a highlighter make-up pen to brighten the area under your eyes. When you arrive, walk tall, shoulders back, chin slightly up, breathe slowly, smile softly (you’ll feel a bit silly but you'll radiate warmth around the room). When in conversation, tilt your head so it’s on a slight angle, and make good eye contact (you’ll look like your engaged in what they’re saying even when your mind is on the canapés). If you're stuck in small-talk, excuse yourself politely to go to the bathroom (if you’re following tip 5 you’ll need to go anyway).
Enjoy your celebrations, you deserve it!
